Is Banksy Oscar Campaigning Through Street Art?

While all of the Oscar nominees for this year's Best Documentary category certainly deserve the accolades that they've been given, I, like many others, truly want Exit Through The Gift Shop to take the prize. Incredibly entertaining and thought-provoking, it's one of the few documentaries that you can find yourself watching over and over without getting tired of it. But there is one problem: Banksy, the film's director, is notoriously secretive about his identity and, as a result, may have trouble campaigning for the movie. Well, he may have found a way.

Movieline recently spotted a mural in Los Angeles that portrays the street artist as half of an Oscar statue with a bunch of Star Wars Stormtroopers at his feet. Above the mural are eight cut-out Stormtroopers, some of whom appear to be clapping. There is no way to tell if this is actually a work by Banksy, but it isn't to hard to imagine that would be something he'd do. Upon hearing about his nomination last week, Banksy was quoted by NME saying, "I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for. The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me."

The big question, of course, is how the artist will collect his award should he win? Will he use it as an opportunity to reveal himself to a global audience? Will he send someone to get it for him? Will he merely record something before hand? It's a query that makes the prospect of Exit Through The Gift Shop winning all the more interesting.
