Payson program gets a handle on graffiti

PAYSON, AZ - The Payson Police Department announced Tuesday that its Graffiti Abatement Program got off the ground this month in partnership with the Gila County Probation Department and several local businesses.

According to a news release, the project was envisioned several years ago when the department was looking for partners and sponsors to assist in cleaning up graffiti.

The first project was undertaken on August 17 when the probation department oversaw a work crew of juveniles that painted the block wall of a local shopping area. Police say officers have made multiple arrests of graffiti offender suspects in that area, most of them juveniles.

Several local businesses supported the program with supplies, including Payson Paint, Neumann Paint, Ace Hardware, Walmart and Home Depot, according to the news release.
