Calgary getting new mailboxes to deter graffiti

Calgarians posting letters with Canada Post this fall will notice that the mailboxes will have a dramatic new look. It's all part of an effort to deter graffiti.

The plain red boxes will be replaced with ones that have a busy pattern that includes postal codes in different fonts. They will also have a special coating to make it easier to remove markings.

Canada Post spokeswoman Teresa Williams tells 660News they will also remove mailboxes from Calgary streets that get fewer than 25 pieces of mail.

Both Calgary and Edmonton will get the new mailboxes starting in September. They are already being used in Winnipeg and Toronto.
